Nobel Laureate Har Gobind Khorana memorial International symposium begins at NABI

National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute, Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Institute of Nano Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Science Research & Education along with our USA collaborators, Drs Uttam L. RajBhandary and Rajinder S Ranu from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Colorado State University, respectively are organizing a three days special symposium from 3-5th December in the memory of Prof. Har Gobind Khorana, who was born and raised in a small village in Punjab and won Nobel prize in Physiology and Medicines in 1968. This symposium will have five scientific sessions dealing with cancer biologh, signal transduction, membrane biology, gene expression, nucleic acids biology, newer features of genetic code, atomic resolution cryo-electron microscopy, glycobiology, biotechnology and a session on plant disease resistance and plant biology. A special session that will cover the reminiscences of Prof. Khorana by his close associates is also included. The symposium has an impressive list of high profile scientists and is expected to inspire many young researchers and faculties from the exemplary zeal and hard work of Prof. Har Gobind Khorana. Practically all scientists/senior professors participating in the program from abroad were trained or worked with in close association of Prof. Khorana. These overseas speakers come from many different countries: USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, China and Belgium. Many of the Indian researchers who were associated with Khorana lab will also be attending/participating the symposium. Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie (VIB), a multi-institute centre for Medical Biotechnology based in Belgium and responsible for translating scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications, also showed interest to be an active partner in the symposium as a tribute to Prof. Khorana for their association with Prof. Khorana over three generations. On this occasion Director of VIB-UGent Center Dr. Nico Callewaert will be delivering a talk in the symposium. Besides, a participation of close to 300 young researchers and established scientists from different parts of the country are also participating and presenting their research work. A special Khorana memorial session has also be arranged to discuss and cite the experiences of the researchers for how their life was impacted by the Nobel Laureate Prof. Khorana work and his exemplary discoveries. The symposium will also benefit Indian students during the interaciton with the eminenet personalities. In this regard Dr. T. R. Sharma, executive director quoted that “Beside discussing and listening to the highest quality science, it is an excellent opportunity for the Indian Scientists to develop collaborations for joint research projects with the Khorana Associates working in different parts of the world. It would be a lifelong experience for many of us who are working in the areas of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.”
